Valerie Marsh is a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in individual, couples and family therapy, as well as relationship and life coaching.
Valerie is an interactive and intuitive therapist who utilizes positive energy psychology, solution focused and cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques. With her holistic, caring and down-to-earth approach, she is committed to supporting her clients through difficult life transitions and offers practical feedback to help clients learn new skills to transform their lives and their relationships. She integrates complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. Encouraging people with compassion and understanding, she is able to help build on their individual strengths to attain the personal change they are seeking.
With over 20 years experience as a licensed therapist, she obtained her Masters of Science from Winona State University in Counseling Psychology in 1998 and her Post-graduate Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary’s University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1999. She has also had extensive training in San Diego in the “Heal You Life” approach created by Louise Hay, and a licensed “HYL” Workshop Leader since 2008, as well as obtaining life coach certification with Dr. Robert Holden, best known for his work on “The Happiness Project” in 2014. She completed her certification with Theta Energy Healing with Brent Phillips in L.A. in 2014. Since 2009, Valerie has trained extensively with Michele Weiner-Davis in Boulder Colorado, best known for her “Divorce BustingĀ®” techniques to help couples heal their relationships. She has also studied “Discernment Counseling” with Bill Doherty to help married couples on the brink of divorce decide whether divorce is the answer. Valerie has had a great deal of experience with mediation and conflict resolution and was on the ADR Neutral Roster in 2004 until her move to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 2009 where she had her private practice, Marsh Family Therapy Center. In 2016, she started her new business, Positive Power Psychology in Mill Valley, California, focusing on holistic relationship and life coaching, and still travels to California during the year to facilitate life/relationship coaching workshops. Valerie’s main office is now located by a nature preserve in Wayzata, Minnesota.
In addition to being a prominent relationship therapist in Rochester, Minnesota for many years, as well as a clinical director for the YRC, Valerie developed and facilitated domestic violence programming for women and worked as a victims advocate in Olmsted County, Minnesota. She was one of the original founders of the Family Violence Coordinating Council of Olmsted County and served on the board of directors for Voices for Children for many years. She was an adjunct faculty member for St. Mary’s University Counseling and Psychological Services Department and taught graduate school courses until her move to Cedar Rapids in 2009. In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she continued her clinical practice, and she also taught Psychology classes at the local community college.
She is also very proud to be a member of the AAMFT since 2002.
With her continued dedication to healing and awareness from her own life experiences with loss and trauma, she facilitates grief and loss groups for her clients, so that they might experience connectedness, empathy and healing with others that truly understand.
